Starting with “My Why”

Welcome to my writing blog. My goal with this blog is to share a bit of my journey as an author. Some ideas for future blog articles:

· What I’m reading and enjoying

· Challenges I run into, or lessons I discern as I build my craft

· Character studies from the stories I am working on

· A scene I am working on

It takes a village to bring a story to life. Writing’s a solo journey, but the opportunity to share with others and hear their perspective is invaluable. If you have thoughts about what would be a topic for a future post, please send me an email at [email protected].

For the initial blog on this site, I thought I would share a bit about why I am pursuing becoming a fantasy author. After a successful career, I’m choosing to retire. But I believe we’re growing, or we’re decaying, and I’m not about to hop on the decay train.

I have always been an avid reader. Fantasy and Science Fiction were the mainstays of my experience with literature growing up. Arthur C Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and so many others in the Science Fiction realm. Anne McCaffrey, J. R. R. Tolkien, Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and so many more in Fantasy. I enjoy modern urban fantasy, including many books and series written by less well-known authors who can spin a wonderful story and world to explore.

I’m still the kid who read with a flashlight under the covers instead of sleeping. I grew out of that. Not late-night reading, but no longer hiding under the covers.

A well-crafted story can excite, engage and amaze. That’s always inspired me. I want to test myself to see if I could bring joy and adventure to others through spinning an entertaining tale. An aspiration of mine for many years. Like many people, I’m pretty good at procrastination. I’ve used work and life to use as a handy excuse for years.

Four years ago, I finally made the decision that when I left the workforce, I would become a fantasy author. I didn’t want to wait till I retired. My plan began. I became a best-selling author and have a couple of business books to my credit (under a different name). I’ve taken classes working on my skills and joined a few writing groups (who provide invaluable help and feedback).

Classes and workshops have shown how much work it takes to craft a successful story and publish it. Fellow authors have done a phenomenal job of helping me improve my craft. My journey is still early, and I have much still to learn.

The novel I’m working on has a current working title of Pursuing Magic. That title might change before I publish. It’s book one of a series and will be ready for publication in early 2025. An urban fantasy adventure. I’ll share my journey on this project in future editions of this blog.

I hope my book will bring some of the sense of joy, wonder and adventure to others that many stories over the years have offered me. I invite you on this journey of adventure as I begin my next quest.
